Context

Faced with the pandemic, several people are adopting pets to keep them company.

Objective

This project was a design test for a job application. In which my mission was to create an app (maximum 3 screens) to help connect people looking for a new pet with their ideal friend. The application should help the tutor to find a pet that matches his style or moment of life.

Competitive Analysis

Some references were brought with the challenge to serve as examples, so I did a competitive analysis among the references, to understand how each one solves these problems, and to outline good guidelines and bad examples to discard my solution.

Insights

  1. The search must come with several possibilities, such as neighborhood, city and / or state.

  2. The experience of all sites ends when the user is in contact with the shelter. What if the whole journey could be done through the App?

  3. Ask the user about location only once when loading the site.

It is true that some solutions such as "Petfinder" and "Amigo Não Se Compra" bring temperaments and other psychological characteristics of pets, but if these characteristics were also tags to be inserted in the user's research?

Persona

Pedro is 22 years old, came from the interior of the state and lives alone in an apartment in Recife. He came to the capital to study at a college and works part-time as a salesman in a store inside the city mall. Practically, the apartment Pedro lives in is only for sleeping, since he spends all day away from home.

Upon the arrival of the pandemic, Pedro had his life turned inside out: His classes were suspended, and his work became a home-office – not before Pedro's anxiety attacked with the danger of losing his job like so many other Brazilians.

Now Pedro's routine is completely inside the house. His work is happening at home and his classes are now online. What was just his sleeping corner became school, work, leisure, etc.

With mixed feelings, and of quarantine, Pedro thinks that he could have someone who could keep him company since he spends so much time alone.

Then he starts to search the internet for some pet adoption sites, and some "gambiarras" like in the “Brazilian Craigslist” OLX. However, the solutions that Pedro found did not answer some of the concerns he had:

  • I need my pet to be small, as I live in a 30 m2 apartment.

  • Will he adapt to being in an apartment?

  • Will he adapt to my family, friends or other people who can visit me?

  • Will he like me?

  • What if I in the future when I return to be away from home? I could bring one more pet to be your company, but would it work?

All these questions always cross Pedro's mind, which makes him think twice, three, several times before deciding to have a pet. Let us not forget his anxiety. Pedro seeks not only a pet, but a pet that can be happy under Pedro's conditions, such as his space, his routines, visits, etc.

Tutor's Journey

I designed a simple user's journey through the site, seeking that the whole experience (from the search to the animal to delivery) can be provided by the service.

Moodboard

Proposed Solution

“Um Anjo Para Chamar De Seu", or "An angel to call your own" in a literal translation, is a website focused to find your perfect pet to adopt, respecting your needs and conditions. It can search for pets by a range of characteristics, such as temperament, size, who they can live with and who don't. This solution also deals with the full experience, from the search to the delivery of the pet.

Screens

I started to draw the profile screen, which in my view will be the most important screen in the application, and will dictate the entire layout and aesthetics of the other screens.

All components and layout were designed based on Material Design, to scale and facilitate the creation of basic components and components.

Conclusion

I learned about the importance of storytelling, especially when creating personas and other design methods such as the user journey map.

Using a mood-board to define a visual and general guidelines for the interface was crucial in creating a language with more personality and life for the project's UI. I was happy to realize that the UI did not become standardized like most websites today, with their various shades of blue and rounded borders.

This project brought many challenges, but the most difficult part of this project was the very short amount of time, 3 days to be exact, to complete it. But not only was I able to deliver it, but I was also able to conduct UX research, albeit brief and simplistic.
